About The Book

Possessed by a demon since she was eleven years old, Mira Fuentes maintains a fragile alliance with the snarky soul who shares her body. Together they hunt down unstable Rifters– demon-controlled humans bent on causing chaos in the mortal realm. But when a routine hunt leads to a powerful Rifter with plans for Baltimore, Mira quickly finds herself in over her head and at the top of the city’s Most Wanted.

Recently retired from the PTF after losing his partner, Ty Williams now works for the Baltimore PD and keeps his distance from cases involving magic. But when a person dies of clearly magical causes and the PTF doesn’t have any agents to spare, Ty is the closest thing the department has to an expert. Saddled with a new partner he doesn’t want and a mountain of self-doubt, it’s his job to track down a suspect who looks suspiciously like the one-night-stand he brought home from the bar last night.

Mira will have to set her trust issues aside and enlist the help of a man determined to uncover her secrets if she hopes to learn the identity of the demon’s host and prevent the human race from becoming meat puppets for the denizens of the Rift.

The Review

Mira Fuentes has been possessed by a demon since she’s 11 years old. With the time she had learned to live with ‘her’ demon and forms an alliance with the creature living inside of her. She hunts down Rifters, which are demon-controlled humans causing chaos in the mortal world.

On her last hunt she meets a very powerful Rifter, with plans for Baltimore, and the hunter Mira finds herself on the wrong side of the law – and of the hunt.

In the middle of that chaos Mira meets Ty Williams, who lost his partner recently and retired from the PTF. He now works for the Baltimore Police Department and stays away from cases involving magic. But after a murder, clearly by magical causes, he is called and pulled into it. All of a sudden, he finds himself in the turbulences of a case where the suspect strongly reminds him of a one-night-stand he brought home recently.

Mira and Ty have to work together to identify the rogue Rifter and have to face not only a powerful opponent, but their own deeply rooted issues, such as self-doubt, anxiety, trust problems, and the seeds of what seems to be an unwelcome liking of each other…

At this point I won’t go any further with the story to avoid spoilers. I would like every reader to enjoy the book without knowing ahead what will happen. I would never forgive myself for ruining this read for someone else!

Demon riding Shotgun is apparently a second installment to the Magicsmith series. Despite not knowing the series before I got this book to read, I had a phenomenal time with the story. At times I wished I had read the first installment, but then, that was my impression, and has nothing to do with the writing or the story.

I fell in love with Mira’s strength, inner power and fighting skills. Also, I find her strong will intriguing and she’s a well-drawn main character. Ty Williams completes Mira’s positive attributes in his own way. At first, I found him a little ‘too broken’, to be an asset to her (and the book), but with time I decided, he was far stronger than I had thought at the first moment.

What I faced with this book was an unexpected, fast-paced story, intriguing, thrilling, well-written, andworked out to the last detail almost to perfection. What was going on between Ty and Mira was just the right amount of ‘I don’t know exactly what it is’ to be believable, and to not distract too much from the story plot.

Mira and Ty make this book work well and turned me from a ‘not so big fan of SciFi/Magic’ into a big supporter of Mira and Ty.
