About The Book
One month after her childhood friend, Gilbert, appeared on the doorstep of her library seeking help in fleeing from the Blue Crescent Brotherhood, Lenna Faircloth — librarian, self-proclaimed dormouse, and lover of all things alcoholic — finds herself in the unlikeliest of situations: roughing it in the forest with her mother’s people, the Freewomen of Laur.
With his dying words Gilbert bequeathed to Lenna one of three powerful artifacts, dubiously named the Godjewels, and it had formed a unique psychic bond with her that only the wards of the Freewoman settlement could mask from the other parties interested in acquiring her gem: mainly, the Emperor of the Krevlum Empire, Alderic Sonnet, and Gilbert’s grieving lover, Luc.
As for Lenna? She’s just interested in taking a bath, having a tall glass of wine, and forgetting the past month even happened.
APPRENTICE continues the tale of LIBRARIAN and follows the adventures of a young woman forced to confront the strange phenomena of her universe and discover what it means to be a hero (albeit a sometimes tipsy one), a friend, and a person with far too much power at their ready disposal.
The Review
It has been a month since Gilbert was killed. Luc stole Raif’s family’s Godjewel, and Lenna found herself the keeper of a Godjewel thanks to Gil. Now she is living at Granemere Settlement with the Freewomen, the one place she and the stone are safe. Raif is still searching for Luc and Sebastien is no longer with the Brotherhood.
Lenna is finally learning everything her mother tried to teach her. Now with the possession of the Godjewel, which has bonded with her, and having the Krevlum Empire seeking her and her stone, it is imperative that she learns how to fight.
She’s been accepted by the Freewomen as one of their own, but how long will it be before the Empire finds her, putting everyone at the Settlement in danger? She also fears for her father, who has not responded to any of the letters she has sent to him.
Raif shows up in his airship, and right behind him is the Empire. The entire Settlement is now in danger, no longer a safe haven for Lenna and the Godjewel. When everyone she cares about is close to death, the stone acts on her emotions and saves everyone, while at the same time destroying the magical barrier that protects the settlement. Lenna has no choice but to join Raif in his airship and head off to find Sebastien, to learn how to control the stone.
When they find Sebastien, he accepts her as his apprentice. Only things are not as she expected – in fact she is shocked. Her stay reveals secrets about her family and the stone, and leaves her wondering what else her parents kept from her. Before she can deal with one surprise and secret, another one comes to light.
This onetime librarian – a junior one at that – finds her life turned upside down, all because her childhood friend Gilbert came to her asking for help. As they say, no good deed goes unpunished. War is coming, and her stone is all she and her friends have to give them an advantage.
This book was shorter than the first, but was a little slow-moving in parts. The second half of the book went at a much faster pace and was filled with exciting and surprising moments. My only real concern is that the first two books were published in 2014 so at this point I have no clue when the final book in the trilogy will be out. I hope the third book comes out soon!
