About The Book

A jaded mage-hunter. A mystery that’s better left unsolved. And a choice that tests morals against codes.

For years, Tracker’s life has had two facets: Hunting spellsters and entertaining strangers in his bed. Few doubt he’s good at both, although only one is considered acceptable amongst the King’s Hounds. His trip to Toptower should be just another task in an endless string of routine. Take down any dangerous spellster he finds and send the timid ones to Demarn’s tower prison.

It is a role he was born to play. One he has grown weary of.

But there’s something off about the spellsters he’s encountering. The people he typically finds aren’t usually this powerful or anywhere near as lethal to a man immune to magic. It’s as if something, or someone, is releasing them with an eye to weaken an already harried kingdom. To what end, he cannot be certain of. History is littered with the dangers of magic running unchecked.

He must uncover the truth, and quickly. But with all leads pointing one way, will he be able to uphold the code of the King’s Hounds once he finds it?

This book contains violence, gore and explicit adult themes.

The Review

This was a great start to this series. I almost don’t know where to start with this. I do have one complaint…lol. I hated the way it ended. But I read the blurb for the next book, and it promises to be a great continuation to the series. I’m very much looking forward to reading it in the future.

The whole story is a spellbinder, from the characters to the world itself. You’re pulled in from the start, following someone who is following someone else. And it just continues to be a page turner after that.

I love Tracker’s character. The backstory of his life led me to root for him from the start. You want him to succeed in everything he does, because life has had a way of being a bit harsh for him. And I see his struggle with wanting to do things different. The more things are done in the way they are, especially when people are being destroyed for being different, the more it takes its toll on him. And I love that he wants to do the right thing.

There were a few times where I had to scream at the book, because I wanted him to make a different decision, but everyone has to grow or change at their own pace and time.

I am curious to see how much he will change. With the way the book left off, I have a feeling that he’s going to make an impact in some big ways. And I love that. The world in this story needs to be shaken up severely and he’s definitely the one for the job.

I highly recommend this book – it was so good, and it’s just the prequel, so I’m very hopeful for the other stories.

Five stars.
