A story of oppression and loss, of uprising and joys. Rubberman's Citizens pushes through grim tyranny with the courage, compassion, and humour of those forced to fight troubled times.
In Citizenry, Leena knew cruelty was normal.
Order was kept by Warren, through intimidation and abuse.
Normal meant deliveries from above, supplies from the great, unknowable, Actual.
Normal meant hating the lessers who live below.
Normal meant routine public degradation.
Normal meant hearing screams, and knowing no one dared help.
Normal was knowing that tomorrow, it could be your own screams being ignored.
Leena found a way to help.
Leena found a chance.
Leena discovered revolution.

The previous book, Rubberman's Cage, exposed us to the section of the facility called Citizenry. We learned a little about its troubled past, and uncertain future.
In Rubberman's Citizens, I explored the terrible things that happened there, and the reasons the rest of the facility locked Citizenry off. I knew I'd have to tackle the issue of rape, and struggled to find a way to deal with it with tact, but also portray the weight of the crime. The characters themselves helped me through it as good people supported each other. A hearty dose of revenge helps too. By the end, healing and hope bring the Citizenry out of their darkest chapter.
