Excerpt:

What in all the Lord’s good grace is that buzzing?

Nothing good. Your Lord has fallen flat. They came out of the sunflowers. The ones you thought pretty.

They are. It is a bright forest of giant sunflowers—how can one complain?

They have bees.

Moonflower raced ahead. I clung to a spur for life’s sake. The dragon dipped into unnaturally tall grass, skimming a lake. A sticky, ropelike tongue shot up. Moonflower spit a crackling bolt, and a charred tongue fell back. We sped south, toward a black haze.

What is this now?

Our view solidified into innumerable jagged peaks. Moonflower lurched back, sending me spinning. Another gift from Your Grace—shining mountains of slag.

I lost my hold and my breakfast and slid down her midsection. Help!

Sorry. She leveled, staying my fall, then diverted east, speeding along the flank of those impossible mountains. Their summits were hidden in clouds.

I thought I would see Quenelle. We’ve been flying for days and found nothing but wildlands. And seem to have run out of south.

Didn’t your grandmother mention a white tower? That should stand out.

A bell tower, yes, in the center of an island. We’ve seen no such thing. Most of this country is draped in forest. Ah well. We have other business.

Do you think to discover one red animal inside this tangled green sea?

I expect to find Lucia and her group. They won’t be so near to Quenelle, but not too far off to want for mischief.

There are scores of beasts down there. Many blood signatures.

The dragon drew my awareness into hers. I noted numerous beating hearts. All sizes and rhythms.

Can you not distinguish between them? Bonobos would be humanlike.

Perhaps. Though we are not certain they are here.

If she is, they will be. If anyone knows where to find the Red Wolf, it’s Lucia.

And the last who would tell you. Your scouts could have seen one of those beasts your grandfather spoke of. Or-rangs?

The gray owls said it had four legs and loped along the ground. Had to be a wolf.

After the death of the great gray Maltheus, lord of the southern peaks, the Red Wolf’s trail had gone cold. He’d been my only scout in the south. His people had been keen to avenge him, yet no trace of the beast woman had been found.

Until this week.
