Sun-splattered waves slithered through rambling curves, churning into froth around my feet. It tickled. The river dove, hugging the slopes. I fell with it, arms out to maintain balance. Green banks rushed by, tangles of reeds, willows, and sedgewellows. Boulders rose, staggered as steps. I caught my breath. My heel hit an outcrop—that would bruise—and sent me tumbling. Clothing snagged, slowing me briefly, then tore. I scrambled to the surface and corralled a wave. It bucked like a beast, but I stayed in place, shifting my weight with the currents. For a moment, I felt pride. Then terror.
Mountain roots squatted in my path. The water leaped over them, scraping me along rocks. It closed over my head. I kicked upward, gasping. Stones sliced my feet. The Neldorlorum gripped with fierce exhilaration, rushing toward its final drop—gliding into chaos.
“Let go! Let go!”
READ MOREScanning the banks, I found no help. Few roamed the shores in lazy late afternoons. No people, nor beasts, looked out. Trees ignored me. They showed no pity for a woman about to plunge to her death. The Coastal Mountains soared, filling all my sight.
Just ahead, I heard a sickening roar.
