A Shaft of Moonlight continues the story of separated lovers Leaf (Tel) and Star (Nova). The travellers Nova, Daniel, Astra and Arlo, enter the forest in their search for Daniel's mother having avoided detection so far. Meanwhile Tel plays with unfamiliar magic without realising what the consequences may be. He sets about enabling the inhabitants of Tolly's to access the world magic and their own magic. There are new friends to make and old ones to reconnect with as the party journeys deep into the Great Forest while Tel makes a life for himself in Tolly's.

“We’re lost! Lost!” Birds swirled around him, squawking, shouting. He covered his ears with his hands and slumped to his knees.
“You did what you had to do,” his grandfather said. “Own it!”
“But look, the feet are all wrong.” He lifted a foot, revealing talons. “They are still bird feet.”
“They’re feet. They can be walked on and just think how useful they’ll be. You worry too much.”
“No! They shouldn’t look like this!”
He felt a hand on his shoulder. He looked up into the darkest eyes he’d ever seen. “Tel?”
“It’s okay. Breathe. You are dreaming. We both are. Start at the beginning.”
