Max took careful aim and swung the hammer. After
several tries a small piece flew off, striking him painfully
on the arm. With a curse Sam threw down the chisel,
which bounced off the rock into one of the panels. There
were several small sparks followed by a wisp of smoke,
and behind them on one of the undamaged panels across
the room, a large light briefly flared an ominous red before
flickering and dying.
The two men looked at each other, then back at the
once again quiescent panel. When a full minute had passed
with no further activity, Sam reached over, and gingerly
picked up the chisel. He backed up several steps, and said
softly, “Did you see that?”
The answer came quietly, but forcely. “No, and neither
did you!”
His companion nodded slowly. “I think we’re done for
the day. We’ll have to come back with some levers or
something.”
They hurriedly picked up their gear, and with a last
backward glance, walked through the door and past the
two bored men standing guard. “We...uh...have to rig up
something to move a large rock. We’ll be back
tomorrow...hopefully.” The guards nodded. One of them yawned
and the two workmen headed down the tunnel toward the stairs.
Thousands of miles overhead, in a control room that
had been abandoned for centuries, a circuit flared into life
and shorted, briefly glowing with a blinding light before
the ancient wires finally melted through. The now unconnected piece of wire floated until it landed across several
other heavily corroded wires, resulting in large showers of
sparks. Several messages appeared briefly on the displays
scattered about the room.
FIRE IN ENGINEERING... CONTROL SYSTEM 37A
OFFLINE... CONTAMINATION WARNING IN HYDROPONICS TANK 7... HULL BREACH IN SECTION 274C...
SHUTTLE LAUNCH FAILURE... ACTIVATING EMERGENCY BEACON IN 5...4...3...2...1. Across the room an
ancient machine stirred into reluctant life and another
message to the dead flashed across a display. EMERGENCY BEACON ACTIVATED.
