The beast hissed. Fangs snapped at Glëa's presence. Its topaz eyes flashed bright golden threads that reached for the king's face. Its growls buzzed. Wordless words resonated in his thoughts. Kindred! You see me. You feel us. Help me.
"Be quiet," Glëa barked at its horned snout. His thoughts continued speaking to the beast on the invisible golden threads that connected their eyes. I am not your kindred. I have not come to help you.
The Surleista howled and thrashed its chains. The iron links held around its ankles. Help me. Help me. When it squawked from its reptilian throat, Glëa could almost make out human words. "Help. Help."
READ MOREDespite his efforts to remain focused on his purpose, Glëa's memories replayed the decades of when he was shipwrecked on an uncharted island in the deep sea. His heart went cold remembering the shrieks of the same type of beasts that had raked the air, day and night, for every moment of the forty years he had been marooned. Constant as the rush of the seashore, hundreds of them had swarmed in a constant cyclone of wings twirling around the barren stone peaks. Hundreds of them were trapped by the ocean's waters like flies in a glass jar. Eternal, un-killable, and constantly hungry, they devoured all but a handful of his ship's crew.
Help me. You know us. You know me. You are me. I am you. We are One. Help me. Help me. The longer the beast growled, the deeper its resonance buzzed into his mind.
Stop, stop, stop, Glëa chanted in his thoughts.
